OPEN GROUP SHOW 1

“Working for years at Max Fish (Legendary NYC Lower East Side bar), with my brother
Marc, we met and became family members with so many great artists of all walks of life,
from all over the world. When we started OPEN, our first thought, after brewing great beer,
was how we can celebrate and give a canvas for these artists that make our world go round?”

-Tino Razo, OPEN founder

JOE ROBERTS

If LSDWORLDPEACE, also known as Joe Roberts, doesn’t want to make art, he won’t make art. His Paintings, drawings, graphics, and books are just one small component of a potent and radiant imagination, one step in his journey, or (let’s face it) kaleidoscopic trip. We are lucky that he chooses to do the work that he does when he does. Not beholden to market demands, Roberts makes art to connect with others, each work hinting at the transcendent, psychedelic potential of everyday experience. Based in San Francisco, Joe has partnered with Supreme and shown at galleries across the globe. His latest book, We ate the Acid, is currently available via anthology.net.

MERYL SMITH

For years, Meryl Smith lived in an art-filled studio on the ground floor of a tenement on the border of the Lower East Side and the East Village, right smack-dab in the center of NYC’s creative universe.

Her home was a completely immersive environment, closer to a bizarre diorama at the Museum of Natural History than a studio apartment, and her informal salons fostered a community of regulars and visitors for decades with her marvelous objects and warm, humor and hospitality.

You don’t have to be an expert in art, or even know Meryl personally, to appreciate what she does: it is freshly inventive, technically complex, but, above all, fun to look at. Meryl’s work reaches you where you are with no prior knowledge.

Whether in sculpture, graphite, acrylic, oil, watercolor, or collage, Meryl’s astonishing works all share exacting and careful process-based technique infused with a tragicomic sensibility.

Meryl has shown at museum and gallery exhibitions around the world and has collaborated on projects with the likes of Oscar winner Spike Jonze, Baker Skateboards, and visionary fashion designers and musicians.
